Can I Use VHI, Laya or Irish Life Health in Northern Ireland?
A guide for Republic of Ireland patients on using Irish private health insurance (VHI, Laya Healthcare, Irish Life Health) for treatment in Northern Ireland, what to ask your insurer, and the self-pay and NIPHS alternatives.
The short answer
It depends on your plan. Irish health insurance policies are built around treatment in Irish hospitals. Some plans include cover for planned treatment in Northern Ireland or the UK, often at specific hospitals or up to a set amount, while many do not cover it as standard. The only way to be sure is to ask your insurer in writing before you book.
VHI
VHI is among the insurers that recognise JACE Private Hospital consultants. Whether your specific VHI plan covers a consultation or procedure in Northern Ireland depends on the plan level and the treatment, so call VHI with the procedure name and ask for pre-authorisation. If they authorise it, bring the authorisation number to your consultation.
Laya Healthcare and Irish Life Health
Cover for planned treatment in Northern Ireland varies widely across Laya Healthcare and Irish Life Health plans, and some only cover treatment abroad when it is not available in Ireland. Ask your insurer whether planned outpatient consultations and day-case procedures at a private hospital in Northern Ireland are covered on your plan, what the limits are, and whether a GP referral is needed first.
What to ask your insurer
Give them the exact procedure (for example colonoscopy, vasectomy, carpal tunnel release or varicose vein ablation), the hospital name (JACE Private Hospital, Greysteel, BT47 3GE) and the consultant's name. Ask: is this covered on my plan, is there an excess or a cap, do you need a GP referral, and can you give me a pre-authorisation number? Get the answer in writing.
If your plan does not cover it
You have two straightforward options. You can book as a self-funded patient, with every price published and totals that include your consultation. Or, with a GP referral, you may be eligible to claim reimbursement from the HSE under the Northern Ireland Planned Healthcare Scheme (NIPHS), which is separate from private insurance. Many Donegal and border-county patients use one of these routes rather than their insurance.
Paying and currency
JACE prices are in pounds sterling. If your insurer covers the treatment they will tell you how they pay, either directly to the hospital or by reimbursing you. If you pay yourself, you can pay by card and your bank converts the amount to euro.
