Is this right for me?

Who this is for

You don't need a diagnosis to book. Your consultant confirms the right route at your first appointment.

  • A change in bowel habit

Persistent diarrhoea, constipation or a change that has lasted more than a few weeks.

  • Rectal bleeding

Blood in your stool or on wiping that needs a proper look rather than a guess.

  • Unexplained anaemia or weight loss

Iron deficiency or weight loss with no obvious cause.

  • Family history or surveillance

A family history of bowel cancer or polyps, or a previous finding that needs re-checking.

How it works

From enquiry to treatment

What happens between seeing the price and your procedure.

  1. 1

    Book a £250 consultation

Tell us your symptoms. You do not need a GP referral, though bringing any previous results is useful.

  2. 2

    Consultant assessment

Your consultant decides whether colonoscopy is the right test, or whether a flexible sigmoidoscopy or gastroscopy would suit you better.

  3. 3

    Bowel preparation

You receive clear written instructions on diet and the bowel preparation drink in the days before.

  4. 4

    The procedure

A flexible camera examines the whole large bowel and rectum. Polyps can often be removed and biopsies taken at the same time.

  5. 5

    Results and follow-up

Your consultant explains what was found. If biopsies were taken, you are told when to expect the results.

Recovery

Aftercare and going home

  • Colonoscopy is a day-case procedure. You go home the same day.

  • If you have sedation or a general anaesthetic, you will need someone to take you home and should not drive for the rest of the day.

  • Our going-home guidance covers what to leave with, driving and supervision after anaesthetic, and who to call if you are concerned.
