Going home after your procedure

Before you leave, you should understand what was done, what to expect while you recover, any medication you've been given, and when to ask for help.

What you should leave with

A discharge summary or GP letter
The information your GP needs for your ongoing care, where relevant to your treatment.
Your medication and instructions
Any medication you need, with clear instructions on how to take it.
Written recovery advice
What to expect, any restrictions, and the warning signs to look out for.

If anything about your medication or recovery is unclear, please ask before you leave.

Don't drive after sedation or an anaesthetic

If you've had sedation, an anaesthetic or an invasive procedure, you must not drive yourself home.

After a general anaesthetic, have someone with you for 24 hours

Someone should stay with you for at least 24 hours. During that time, avoid alcohol, operating machinery and making important decisions.

If you think you'll need extra help while you recover, arrange it with your family, friends or GP before the day of your procedure.
