Going Home
What patients should leave with after their procedure
Use this guide to understand the discharge process, what information and medication you should have before leaving, and what practical support may be needed once you are back home.

Before You Leave
Discharge should feel clear and complete
Before going home, patients should understand what treatment was carried out, what to expect during recovery, what medication they have been given, and when they should seek further support.
Ask questions before leaving if anything about medication or recovery is unclear.
Make sure any written instructions are with you before discharge is completed.
Arrange support at home in advance if your consultant or nursing team have advised this.
GP letter or discharge summary
You should leave with the information needed for your GP and ongoing care where this is relevant to your treatment.
Medication and instructions
Any medication and aftercare instructions should be explained clearly before you go home.
Written recovery guidance
You should receive clear written advice on what to expect next, including any restrictions or warning signs to watch for.
Important aftercare reminders
Plan support at home if needed
If you think you may need extra support after your procedure, discuss this with your GP or support network before the day of treatment.
Do not drive after sedation or anaesthesia
If you have received sedation, anaesthesia, or invasive treatment, you must not drive yourself home.
General anaesthetic means 24-hour supervision
If you have had a general anaesthetic, someone should stay with you for at least 24 hours afterwards, and you should avoid alcohol, machinery, and important decisions during that time.
